Developing alternative methods that can reduce the use of animal testing is a moral obligation. Under certain pieces of European legislation, it is also a regulatory requirement. In November 2005 the European Commission, seven industry sectors and individual companies joined forces to create the European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA). In a unique collaborative effort, the partners work together on the ‘3Rs’, finding ways to replace, reduce and refine existing animal tests by using the best of science and modern alternative approaches. Five working groups The EPAA’s work is guided by its action programme, adopted in May 2006, which sets out its initial short, medium and long-term activities. This contains five main themes that are being implemented by a similar number of working groups involving over 100 experts. The objectives of WG1 are:
To achieve the objectives of WG1, an “In-house methods questionnaire” and a “Research methods questionnaire” have been designed and are available on this web page. The information provided by the questionnaires responders is presented in two databases also available on this web page: an “In-house Review” database and a “Research Review” database. In-house Review databaseWhat is it? A non-exhaustive inventory of alternative tests and approaches employed by companies in screening or decision-making processes related to product safety evaluation. What is the objective? To identify alternative approaches/methods with potential for transfer and reapplication within and between sectors. Who can access it? For personal data protection and security reasons, the access is limited to the end users, i.e. those involved in safety studies or in development of 3Rs methods:
How to gain access? Access to the In-house Review questionnaire and database can be gained following registration by completing the “Participation Request” . Registration is restricted and requires a justification of need to access the database. Research Review databaseWhat is it? A non-exhaustive database of ongoing research projects that are intended to result in 3Rs benefits in the assessment of human, animal and environmental safety. What is the objective? To facilitate the identification of gaps and to make it possible to coordinate and make complementary the research initiatives supported by the EPAA partners. Who can access it? The database is open to all stakeholders (industry, Commission services, academia, NGOs and regulatory authorities). How to gain access? Access to the Research Review questionnaire and database can be gained following registration by completing the “Participation Request”. |
